The schooner Awanui sails to-day for Auckland. . __ Messrs Richardson and Co.’s Fanny arrives from Napier this morning, probj'vfv returning in the evening. The U.S.S. Co.’s Squall left for Auckland at 6 p.m. last night. A number of oil motor boats ordered from the Osaka Iron Works by the Residency-General in Korea, have been completed and are to be sent to Kure to be fitted with guns. The boats are to be used to guard the Korean coast. Soundings taken by the Italian Government in the Straits of Messina have •proved that the sea, at flood tide, rWinds two feet higher than the former highest limit, and that the level is still gradually rising. The current through tire straits now runs at the speed oh seven knots. It is over seven years .since the Government acquired "the steamers and (plant of the Lake Wakatipu Steamfihip and the promises of the great improvements that were to the- effected on the acquisition of the service by the State are completely unredeemed. —Otago “Daily Times.” BY TELEGRAPH.
