RHODES SCHOLARS.
CRITICISMS BY THE “TIMES
United Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, Jan. 26. The “Times,” commenting on the annual Rhodes’ statement, hinted that at Oxford it has been found that ele‘mentary training of some, of the colonial and American scholars leaves much to be desired , and weights them in the race for university distinction. The American and colonial reply is that compulsory Greek cuts out 75 per cent, of the ablest candidates. The “Times” notes the brilliant career of Mr Berans, a Victorian, Mr Ziman, a New Zealander with an honorary Balliol mathematical scholarship, Mr Rivett, a South Australian, and first-class final honor; Messrs Scrivols and Dunbabin, Tasmanians, diplomas in .geography with distinction. v Of 78 colonials 53 have returned’ home; 12 are completing further study; 3 have gone/to India, and 2to foreign countries, and the rest are working in England.
HOBART, Jan. 29. Mr T. Rockcliffe has been chosen Tasmanian Rhodes scholar for 1910.
