WAIKAREMOANA POWER SCHEME.

A conference of the joint committee appointed by the Borough Councils of Gisborne. Wairoa, Hastings, and Napier to investigate and report on the question of establishing joint hydroelectric generating station at Waikaremoana was held in the Napier Borough Council Chambers this afternoon. There were present: Messrs W. Douglas Lysnar (Mayor of Gisborne), AV. C. Munro (representing the Borough of Wairoa), J. A. Millar (Mayor of Hastings), and Geo. Nelson (representing the Borough of Napier). A report prepared' by Mr. Nelson was ladi before the meeting, which, after a lengthy discussion, passed the following resolution: —“That this conference recommends thati each local authority affected should take tile possibility of the whole Waikaromoana electrical power scheme into its favorable consideration, and the following course is suggested: (a) That each local authority should collect reliable data on which to base the estimate of what power could be sold to freezing works or other established industries in its respective districts, and after deducting this from its share of the gross annual cost, including interest and sinkiii" fund, the net probable cost to the locality for general purposes wuold be known ; (b) if, after the authorities have so ascertained their financial position. and the conclusions are in favor of the adoption of the scheme, then the following steps should be taken — (1) to ascertain unon what terms water rights can be used, and to arrange with the Government to use the same without charge: (2) to have Mr. Geo. Nelson’s report submitted to some other reliable expert or experts to ascertain if his conclusions and calculations are reliable and correct; (3 that a further conference should be held in a month’s time.
