RATES ON RAILWAYS.
CONDEMNATION FROM WANGA-
NUI. [Per Press Association. 1 WANGANUI, Feb. 4. Members -of the Chamber of Commerce last evening spoke strongly in condemnation of the different rates oil railways. They ridiculed the Minister’s statement that lie " : a.s running the railways, to pay. It was stated that the rate per ton per mile for the carriage of coal 20 miles was old, and lor 200 miles only 2 l-od,. The freight on coal from Taupiri to Wanganui, 280 miles, was 15s 6d,, but the freight on other coal to Taupiri would-be 18s 3d. The freight on coal from Wanganui to 'Taihape, 79 miles, was 9,s 5d per ton; Taupiri and Wanganui, 280 miles, only 11s 2d,; Wellington to- Taihape, 160 miles, 10s 9d. The freight from Taupiri to New Plymouth, 387 miles, was only 13s, so that coal was carried from Wanganui to New Plymouth, 107-miles, for Is lOd a ton. Ordinary coal landed at Wanganui was charged 8s 3d per ton, and Newcastle 10s 7d to Hawera, but the Government railed Taupiri coal from Wanganui to Hawera for Is. jhe Chamber expressed the opinion, that the freights were inequitable and unbusinesslike, and a public meeting is to be held to protest.
