SENIOR COMPETITION

SATURDAY’S MATCHES

The senior and junior competitions were proceeded with at Victoria. Bomain and Tarulieru on Saturday alternoon in perfect weather. In the senior grade the match between 1 .M.C.A. at Victoria Domain was marked by remarkably fast scoring, the bat maintaining an ascendancy over the ball throughout. In the game between Wanderers and Tarulieru, at Tarulieru, the bowlers held the upper hanc’,\ and only 177 runs were scored for ixe loss of sixteen wickets.

WANDERERS v. TARUHERU. These teams mot in the opening mrttch of the third and concluding round of senior fixtures, at Tarulieru, on Saturday. Tarulieru had first strike on the excellent turf wicket, but could only total 108 against the steady bowling of the six Wanderers bowlers tried. The colt Gough was top scorer with IS. made in confident style. Dillon ran to 17, including a couple of fine drives for four, while Davies and Hannigan also notched double figures. Babbs and Young were the best of the Wanderers bowlers, the former in particular keeping a good length and direction. Wanderers fared badly on going to the wickets. Babbs and McMahon opened to the bowling of Hannigan and Davies. After a few overs, Hooker relieved Hannigan, and with the fourth ball of his second over clean bowled Babbs with a trimmer. 7—l—2. Young joined his captain, and the latter ran into double figures. McMahon was using his feet well, and getting out to Davies’ slows. With the total at 17, Young was run out, after scoring a single. After another run had been added, McMahon went out to Davies, but the break beat him and the ball found his sticks. He had shaped well for 14. At 25, Commons stopped one with his pad, pitched- on the wicket, from Davies, and retired leg-before. Moore and Glennie then became associated, and took the total to 51 by good cricket. After scoring a dozen Hannigan broke through Moore’s defence with a fast one which kept low. Glennie scored 22, in which wore three good strokes for four, before being snapped up by Hannigan, off Monk. McConnell and Tonics were together when time was called, the board then showing six wickets down for 69 runs. The second day’s play should be full of interest. Y.M.C.A. v. UNITED.

Y.M.C.A. and United met on the turf Avicket at Victoria Domain. Barker Avon the toss, and having only six men on the ground, elected to bat. Mill opened Avith bis captain, and a -great stand was made. At 86, Barker had the misfortune to be badly run out, after playing a sound innings for 36. Miller joined Mill, and runs came rapidly. Y.M.C.A.’s six men brought the score to 172, a very creditable performance, and they then had to declare. Lang and Gibson opened for United, and had the bowling at their mercy. Lang played a forceful innings, driving over the boundary repeatedly. Gibson also played good cricket, and when Lang was bowled by Nelson the partnership had yielded 94 runs. ALHAMBRA v. WANDERERS

These teams met <pi the chip wicket. .Alhambra went in first and made 48 (Sim 24, Mcßae 15) for nine wickets, against the bowling of Smith 3 for 17 and Parker 5 for 29. Wanderers replied with 59 (Winter 9 not out, Smith 9, Tier 9, and Burrows 8). For Alhambra the wickets were, taken by Watson 4 for 8, Dixon 4 for 23, Atkinson 2 for 14. Alhambra in their

second innings made 41 >(Mcßao 21, Sim 9). Smith secured 7 wickets for 22 and Parker 2 for 17. Play then concluded, and Wanderers secured a two-point win on the' first innings.

Y,M.C.A. v„ UNITED. These teams played on’the concrete wicket. United' were sent in to bat, and having only six men knocked up 19 runs, -Ckirnside 8, McLeod 3 and Clarice 3 being the chief contributors against the bowling of Pollock (2 for 8), Jones (2 for 3) and Winter (0 for 4). Y.M.C.A. quickly compiled 96 the chief contributors being Brown (23), Edwards (15), and Jones (retired 27). For United the bowlers were McLeod (3 for 43), Gatlaud (4 for 36), Chirnside (0 for 7). In their second try United, witli seven men, only managed to make 20 (Clarice 9. Chirnside 3, McLeod 3), against the bowling of Edwards (5 for 11) and Winter (1 for 7). Y.M.C.A. thus secured a threepoint win by an innings and 57 runs.

AUCKLAND MATCHES

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 6

The Auckland Cricket Association s district championship matches, postponed from January 2Gth, were continued on Saturday, in beautiful weather. In the senior grade two matches were unfinished. Considerable interest was taken in the Parnell v. North Shore match, both teams being equal in points, and leading for the senior championship. The match, however, was unfinished, and the position remains unaltered. The senior grade matches resulted as follows: — Parnell v. North Shore: Parnell first innings 203 for 7 wickets (innings declared closed), Caro 66 not out, A. Jones 50. Howden took 6 wickets for 101 runs. North Shore first innings SS for 7 wickets (Prime 2S). Oliff took 3 wickets for 29 runs. Eden v. Grafton : Eden first innings ISS for 5 wickets, innings declared closed (A. E. Relf 112 not out). Grafton first innings 119 for 2 wickets (E. Horspool 67 not out, S. P. Jones 33). University v. Ponsonby: University first innings 186 (Taylor 41, Robinson 3S not out). Woods took 5 wickets for 75. Ponsonby first innings 225 for 7 wickets (L. G. Hemus 73. N. Sneddon 58, W. Robinson 34). Ponsonby won by 49 runs on the first innings, withjhreo wickets in hand, a two-point win.

CHRISTCHURCH MATCHES. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 5. The first grade cricket matches were continued to-daj 7 in fine weather. West Christchurch, the leading team, fared badly against Riccarton. The last mentioned made 209 (Caygill, who played an excellent innings, 72, Harper- 43). West Christchurch replied with 59 for four wickets (Rees 39 rot out). St. Albans made 145 igain.vt East Christchurch (T. W. Reese 44, Wood 35). East Christchurch processioned for 85. St. Albans in .their second innings lost one wicket for 3 runs. Linwood shaped badly against Sydenham, being disposed of for 118. Sydenham replied with IS9 for eight wickets (Patricks played a capital innings for 50).

OTAGO PDUNKET ELEVEN v. A THIRTEEN.

DUNEDIN, Feb. 5

This afternoon the Otago eleven to play Auckland for the Plunket Shield met the next thirteen at Carisbrook, in fine weather. The scores were: Next thirteen, first innings, 178 (Baker 37, Chadwick 32). Bowling: Downes 2 for 75, Fisher 2 for 41, Macartney 7 for 30. Otago eleven: 118 (Rutherford IS not out, Hopkins 17, Fisher 14, Wordsworth 14, Wilson 12). Bowling : Cummings 6 for 45, Torrance 3 for 48, Godfrey 1 for-5.
