Questioned by a press representative regarding the responsibility of the Marine Department for surveying localities such as that in which the steamer ICaipara mefc with a mishap, the Hon. J A. Millar, Minister of Marine, stated that it was not his department’s duty to undertake soundings around Auckland harbor, or to mark the channel. As the magistrate conducting the inquiry had expressed a desire for an independent survey, the Government lvid asked the Admiral in charge of the Australasian squadron if lie would permit the captain cf the H.M.S. Challenger. now in Aucklanod, to survey the slioal which- the Kaipara had struck, but it was doubtful if further information, would be available, as it was mentioned- by the Auckland harbormaster that the existence of the shoal was previously known.
