M. Thain, cashier of the Lille branch of the Bank of France, was called to a fashionable private house to receive 400 francs, and was robbed and murdered. His body was discovered in a garret. Antoine Favier, owner of the house, absconded. A mob of 6000 Lille townsfolk tried to lynch Madame Favier, who was arrested, hut mounted police rescued her.
