NAPIER BOROUGH ELECTION
TPkr Press Association. 1 NaPIER, Feb. 9. An election to fill a vacancy on the Napier Borough Council, caused by the resignation of one of the disqualified Councillors, was held to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr. Malcolm Treston, a new aspirant for municipal honors. The voting was as follows: — Treston 570, Montague Lascelles 430, James Beagley 164.
ALLEGED THEFT OF PIANOS
WELLINGTON. Feb. 9
The charges against Edward John Falkner, telegraphist, for alleged theft of pianos, was further inquired it to to-day. Accused was committed for trial on several informations. Others are proceeding. A DEFAULTING UNION SECRETARY. Additional charges were brought against William Williams, secretary of the Iron and Brass-founders’ Union, for alleged misappropriation by him of £l2O altogether front the union funds. He appeared on remand in the Court to-day, -when counsel intimated that a plea of guilty would he entered. A further remand was granted. A RAILWAY MISHAP. WESTPORT, Feb. 9. At Waimangaroa Junction railway yard a locomotive drawing a passenger train and a shunting locomotive collided, head on, on the main line. One engine was badly damaged. Some trucks were derailed. 0 lie passengers were shaken, but nobody was hurt. A CHARGE OF FORGERY. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 9. James Lewis, at the Magistrate s Court, was committed for sentence on a charge of forgery. A DUCK COMPETITION. The New Zealand Utility Poultry Club is organising a duck competition to commence in May.
A SERIES OF THEFTS. TIMARU, Fob. 9A series of thefts occurred in Timaru tliis week, two hotels and restaurants being) visited by thieves, who secured in the aggregate over £IOO in cash. This afternoon two men, who had arrived from Dunedin on the previous day, were arrested on suspicion, and will appear befor© the uourt to-morrow. WESTPORT COAL CO DUNEDIN. Feb. 9. At the annual meeting of the Westport Coal Co., a dividend of 3s 6d per share and a bonus of Is 9d per share was declared. DIVORCE CASES. At the Supreme Court, in two undefended divorce suits, the wife’s petition in each case, rules nisi were obtained. These were Murray v. Murray and Watt v. Watt, desertion in both cases. In one case it was mentioned that the respondent rendered himself liable for bigamy, but had disappeared from Millerton. SALE OF W AIK ARE WRECK. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 9. The wreck of the s.s. Waikare was sold at auction to-day for £2OO to J. IC. Jamieson, of Invercargill. THE MUTTON-BIRD ISLANDS. The Native Land Court has been sitting for a- week to ascertain the Native rights to the mutton bird islands. Last season’s take of birds was valued at £I2OO, which was divided amongst . 300 persons. The proceedings will probably last till the end of the week.
