NAPIER HARBOR.

THE NEAT AYHARF

A great deal has been heard recently about the new harbor improvements in Napier, and surprise lias been expressed in many quarters that the new wharf has not been made use of by tlie. Home-going steamers, who still prefer to load from lighters in the roadstead. AA T hen Mr. AA'. D. Lysnar was in Napier last week, he was told by the Mayor of Napier, Mr. -J. A'igor Brown, M.P., that when the Clan liner Clan MacFarlane was there on January 1-lth she came alongside the breakwater anc loaded about 3000 bales of wool, on which the freight would be about £3OOO. By loading at the breakwater close upon £2OO for lighterage was saved to the farmers, and the steamer got speedy despatch, although the U.S.S. Co.'s Flora and Mokoia were being worked at the wharf at the same time. AA'hen the Clan MacFarlane left the wharf she was drawing 2-sft of water, and Mr. Lysnar from his observations is satisfied that in ordinarily calm weather there is absolutely no risk to the l-mp vessel.'! iu 'cming to the wharf.

While be was in Napier last week, Air. Lysnar saw that two large vessels were loading from lighters in the roadstead, and he was informed by one large oxjiorter of farming produce that unless the existing conditions were altered and tile vessels came up to the wharf, lie would support any new line that would do so. Mr. L ysnar considers that the action of the Clan line agents in sending their steamers alongside the wharf will soon force the other companies into following suit.
