AIAEINE ENGINEERS’ INSTITUTE

A very fine building erected in Alulgrave Street for the Australasian Institute of Alarino Engineers was officially opened this morning. The Hon. J. A. Millar, Alinister for Alarine, declared the building open in the presence of a large crowd, including manv prominent citizens. Air. James Darling, president of the Institute, presided, and short speeches of congratulation to the Institute were made bv the Alinister and the Alayor of ’Wellington, Dr. Newman. after which the company inspected the buildings and were entertained at tea.

A big garden party organised bv the Christchurch Domain Board, to raise funds for improvements at the publicgardens. was held yesterday, in perrect weather. There was an enormous attendance. the takings exceeding £-500. A GENEROUS DONATION. AUs. Townend has given £IOO to the funds of the Society for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children.

CHARGES OF FORGERY

D. A. Hamilton pleaded guilty at the- Alagistrate’s Court to three charges of forgery and uttering, in Alay, and June of the past year. He was committed for sentence

UNLICENSED LIQUOR-SELLING. A tobacconist named T. H. James was before the Court to-day on a charge of having sold alcohol without a license. The case had curious features. James undertook to cure various ailments and sold the medicine as a side line. The police had Some medicine analysed, and found it contained 7 7 per cent of alcohol, being chiefly ;rin with vegetable ingredients added. The nolice searched the premises and found thirteen bottles of gin. and 26 empty bottles in the yard.. The evidence suggested that- James’s patients chiefly suffered from bad legs. The case was in the nature of a test, and accused was fined £1 aud costs.
