HOSPITAL SATURDAY.
A SUCCESSFUL APPEAL
For the first time in the history of this district a “Hospital Saturday” collection was made in Gisborne on Saturday. and an enthusiastic and willing band of voluntary collectors, armed with the red cross badge, paraded the streets from early morning until late at night seeking donations, small or large, to swell the funds of a deserving institution. While the streets were carefully canvassed., other portions of tlie town were not neglected, and the incoming steamer and the railway station were attended to, while the cricketers at the Victoria Domain, and the bowlers on the Gisborne and Turanganui greens were interrupted in their pastimes by the visit of a couple of ladies, armed with small white boxes, and whose intrepid advance into mere man’s dominion met with no small measure of success.
The result of the collection with that the liberal sum of £240 was raised, an amount which speaks volumes for the energy displayed by the workers in their labor of love. Thisi sum carries with it a Government subsidy of 24s in the £, and as the expenses in connection with the movement will probably be under £lO, it is anticipated that the hospital funds will benefit to the extent of just about £5lO, a result which can only be regarded as eminently satisfactory. Tiie thanks of the community are due to the lady and gentlemen collectors for their good work, and great credit is also due to the organisers of the movement, Mr. 11. M. Porter, secretary of the Hospital Trustees, and Mr. E. G. Matthews, the late secretary. Mr Porter’s office was, during the day and evening, the collectors’ headquarters. Refreshments for the collectors were kindly provided by Mrs. Stevenson (Poverty Bay Tea Rooms), Mr. Hoff (Alexandra Tea Rooms), and by Mr. A. Parnell at Mr. Christopulo’s tea rooms. Tlie following is a list of the lady collectors, who worked in relays during the day and evening, and in the latter part- they were assisted by a number of gentlemen : —Mesdames Murray, Larnacli, Jex-Blake, Matthews, Grey, Porter, Kissling, NYm. Smith, O’Meara; Miss Godfrey (matron of the hospital), Nurses Hortop, Light. Butler. Robson, Carmichael, Nelson, Cantwell, Curtis, and Hurrey; Misses Melville, Lockie, H. Gumming, Kenny.
