Alarcel Rodel, the sole survivor of the wreck of the General Clianzy, was asleep when the vessel struck. A terrific explosion followed.

Everyone, including the officers, was panic stricken.

Women and children, without clothing, rushed to the decks, and the waves washed them into the sea. The steamer sank in three minutes.

Rodel, in an unconscious condition, was washed into a cave. On regaining consciousness he built a breakwater of wreckage outside, and later oil he climbed the cliff.

The body of a woman, who was almost nude, and who was clasping a baby, was washed ashore in a cask.

The drowned include many French soldiers and officers.

Six Valparaiso steamers are racing at full speed to Huemblin Island, where 88 persons are still clinging to the rigging of the wrecked steamer.
