DUNEDIN, Feb. 15. At the Supreme Court to-day, John Harry Turner, charged will carnally knowing a girl under 16, pleaded guilty, but said that the girl had led him to believe she was over 16. This was taken as a plea of not guilty, and after evidence had been given the jury was unable to agree, and the accused was remanded till the next criminal sittings, and was released on his own recognisance of £25. Francis Patton Pbilp, found guilty yesterday of the theft of a mare, saddle and bridle, was* sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Alexander McLennan was found not guilty on a charge of vagrancy. George T. Buckley, found guilty yesterday on a charge of carnally knowing a girl under 16, came up for sentence. Judge Williams said that this was an exceptional case, and accused was admitted to probation for 12 months, and ordered to ipay 2s 6d per week towards the cost of the prosecution. SITTINGS AT PALMERSTON NORTH. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 15. At the Supreme Court- to-day Leu Boranoff, who recently toured New Zealand’ giving lectures as a Russian exile, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for indecent assault on a little girl at FeUding. Boranoff had five previous convictions in England and Scotland as Albert Barmestein and three in New Zealand. He was identified in New Zealand as Barmestein through finger prints and photographs.
