ANNUAL CONVENTION

INVERCARGILL, Feb. 15

At the Women's Christian Temperance Union convention a comprehensive good citizenship report was read, mentioning the work dene in this department in different localities, and after a suggestive address by Mrs. Baird, anent overcrowding in schools, it was resolved that the overcrowding in class rooms in primary schools was at present a serious menace to the health of the pupils, and that, as children were forced to spend a long proportion of childhood in school-rooms, it is imperative that sufficient and sanitary accommodation be provided ior.

It was decided that a Maori convention be held at Napier at an early date.

Resolutions were passed urging all branches to work for the return orbsuitable women to Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, under the provisions of the new Act; approving of the boy scout movement, but urging great care in supervision, and the appointment of matrons to scout camps; congratulating the Minister of Justice on the Bill for dealing with degenerate children ; urging the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Act; urging that hospital accommodation should be provided for those suffering from venereal diseases, who should voluntarily present themselves for treatment; that the time limit in connection with offences against girls should he abolished ; that the sex distinction enforced by the Factory Act should be abol- -c

ished: urging popularly-elected boards of men and women to control all Jpublic institutions for the care of /men, women and children; affirming the principle of the initiative and referendum, and the elective executive, and protesting against the legalising of the totalisator and the bookmaker.
