CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON.

WELLINGTON, Feb. 15. The conference of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants resolved" that where promotions are governed by percentage, the Classification Act should be amended so that not less than the number stated in the Act shall be first grade (at present, owing to the wording of the schedule, the Department has power to fix the minimum); that tablet porters should be paid for extra hours occupied in postal work; that representations be made to the authorities concerning the employment of porters, shunters, and’ storemen at, porters’ rates of pay. The Conference resolved that . the management be requested to allow sur_ facemen and gangers to take only half an hour for lunch during the winter, leaving work correspondingly earlier; that members of the Wav and Works Department be allowed to return home by the first available train after finishing the week’s work : that iron-working machinists (sub-class 5) be placed in the same position as regards pay as woodworking machinists (sub-class 4): that carpenters who have to provide their own tools be granted 6d per day extra allowance; that casuals who have served over five years should be put on the permanent staff: that all casuals continuously employed be granted privilege tickets and passes irrespective of what department thor may be employed in : and that dining and sleeping oar attendants be placed on the D 3 list.
