GARDEN FETE.

IN AID OF MATERNITY HOME.

There was only a very small attendance at the garden fete held l in the Hon. Captain Tucker’s paddock yester_ day afternoon in aid of the funds! of tln> Maternitv Home. The Mayor (Mr W. D. Ly.snarl, accompanied bv Mrs. Lysnar, was present for the purpose of declaring the function open, but owin<r to the smallness of the attendance there was no speechmaking. In addition to a fancy work stalk there was a large refreshment tent, and another attraction was the. Twentieth Century Lawn Swing, lent for the occasion by Mr. Ralph Warren, the local agent. A cage of monkeys for exhibition purposes was lent by Mr. T. A. Crawford. The f< Hewing ladies were assisting rti the function : Mcsdames Johnston, Beeie (2). A. Graham, Church. Steele, Scott, Gcldsmith, Lentil 1. Gordon, Crawford, Stevenson, and Lyndon, Misses Cross, Johnston, Morell, and Tills. During the afternoon a number of races were ri(.‘ by the young people present, who received 1 their prizes at the hands of tin-' Mayoress.

In ti e evening there was a good attendance, when a pleasant concert was held. The grounds looked pretty, being lit up profusely bv Chinese lanterns. His Worship the Mayor again attended, and presided. Tim following programme was gone through, many of .the items being heartily encored: — /Song, “My-Beloved Queen.-’ Mr. R. Warren: song, “Song of Coo,” Miss I l’ovei : comic song, Mr. A. Stemi-w, retd at ion, “A Tramp’s Story,’ Mt. Collins; song, “The Childrens Home,” Madam Cleave: violin solo, My. Rhinesrriith: song “Two Cities,” Mrs. Lyndon; song, “Teach Me to Forget,” Mr. Simpson; seeantrous dance. Miss B. Pearce: song (by request), “A Ray of Peace,” Mrs. Lyndon ; song “Gleaners’ Slumber Song,” Madam Gleave: song, “Go To Sou,” Mr. R. Warren. During the evening the Gisborne City Band added to the enjoyment of those present by rendering in an efficient- manner the following programme: March, “Invader”; waltz, “Star of Love”; polka, “Entro Nous”; waltz, “Rose Queen” ; waltz, “Gipsy lafe” ; march, “Mazoppa.” '
