NOT GUILTY
rpr.K Press Association. I AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. Oscar James Hodder, charged with indecent assault on a girl under 10. in which the jury disagreed on tinfirst trial, was found not guilty on a second trial, and was discharged.

A quantity of jewellery. roughly valued at £IOO has been found here to have been forwarded to a local auctioneering firm by Davies and 'Haynes, ni< Wanganui jewellers arrested concerning the fire at the Rutland Hotel.
ARRESTS FOR INCENDIARISM
MASTERTON, Feb. 17
To-night two Chinese, Fen Gen and Wong Gee, were arrested on a charge of attempted incendiarism in connection with the fire that broke out in a shop in Queen Street on Monday night. There arc a number of suspicious circumstances.
A LIBEL ACTION
WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. A writ lias been served »on tlie “New Zealand Times." at the instance of Mr. T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay. claiming £2OOO damages for an alleged libel in connection, with a re pm l which appeared in the “Times" describing the race for the New Zealand Cup. Tlie case Is set down for hearing at Namier in June.
SUICIDE AT NEWTOWN
Percy Parish, single, aged about 2 i years, a laborer employed at the Newtown car-sheds, blew his brains our with a Winchester rifle after tea this evening. He had been suffering from melancholia, for which lie had been medically treated. Deceased, whose parents reside at- East Oxford. North Canterbury, had been in the service of the corporation at the car-sheds for about four years. Last November he went home on sick leave. Returning early this week t-o resume work, it was observed that he was very melancholy, and Mr. Arthur Crombie. with whom Parish stayed, obtained medical advice for him.

At the Supreme Court to-morrow a special case will be argued in connection with a claim by tlie Board of Governors of Canterbury College :»r compensation, to the extent oi over £3OO, in respect to portions of the Board’s Craigieburn run, taken by the Public "Works Department for the purposes of the Midland railway line. The special case is for tlie 'purpose of determining some preliminary questions of law as to the Crown’s liability to pay compensation for the whole or any part of the lands taken, and will !>e preliminary to further proceedings before the Assessment Court.

DUNEDIN, Feb. 17
The Standard Insurance Company's income for the past year was £124,030 and the expenditure £103.391. Of the balance £SOOO was carried to reserve. An interim dividend absorbed £2812. The dividend for the half-year ended December 31 absorbs £2812,,~a bonus of 2 per cent £1876, and £8139 is carried forward.
