WRESTLING.

HACKENSCHMIDT DEFEATS

SCOTT

The match between George Hackensclimidt and Robert James Ct’ec-tt, champion of Australasia, under "catch-as-catch-ean” rules, took place at the Wellington Town Hall on Wednesday last,, and proved a hollow victory (or Hackensehmidt, who disposed of challenger with the greatest ease. I lie “Now Zealand Times'’ gives the following account of the match: Scott made his appearance, being greeted with a hearty round of -p----plause, which was renewed when Hackeiischinidt stepped into the ring. The difference in tiie men was immediately apparent, file champion locking immensely powerful, while his much taller opponent seemed of quite slignt build by comnarison, albeit lie had a wiry and well-trained appearance. The first bout was of Hie “short and sweet” order. The instant the men closed Scott went down and was almost pinned, but wriggled clear. ’Hackenselnnidt then got a counter hold, one arm round the leg and the other across the back. Despite Scott’s utmost efforts (he was turned over and. -using his enormous strength, the Russian forced him down, scoring first fall in 55sec. After a breath of ten minutes the pair met again. This time Hackenschmidt immediately had his man on the mat, but Scott cleverly got away. Not to be denied the visitor got- a waist hold, pulling Scott backwards. The latter adopted a sitting position, a good one against ordinary wrestlers, but it was useless against Hackenschmidt, who, really adopting Graeco-

Roman methods, pulled Scott over and by sheer strength pinned him fairly in lmin 18sec. Good iman .as he is, Scott was outclassed and failed to stay with ins redoubtable antagonist as long as was expected, while he had no opportunity <,f showing his really clever footwork. , •
