ROWING.

POVERTY BAY" CLUB

The second round for the President’s trophies was concluded on Saturday evening, under very unfavorable weather conditions, torrents of rain falling at the time of the races. M. McLeod, W. Hall, E. Whitfield, and O. Hansen beat H. Holschier, G. Peterson, T. Collingwood, and ; L. Ensor. McLeod got well away at the start, -gaining a slight- lead on the other crew. Near the first bend, Holseliier drew up level, in ■ which position both crews raced till the bridge was reached, where McLeod showed his superiority by drawing ahead and winning by a length. C. Clark, T. Parker, -J. O’Neill, and B. Carton defeated A. Kirk, J. Weston, R. Wilkinson, and R. Wright by tile narrow margin of about three feet. Both crews from the start realised that tlic race would be a hard one, each doing his host to outstrip the other. It was very doubtful, watching the race all along, to guess which crew would win, till about two hundred, yards from the post, when Kirk’s men showed signs of fatigue. Clark at this' juncture livened up, and putting in an -extra spurt -at the finish, won by theabove distance.

The semi-final takes place this evening, when McLeod meets Doig. Clark received a bye.
