AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

The first day’s racing of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Champion, ship meeting provided some sensational contests. The weather -was ideal, the -bright sunshine being tempered by a cool breeze, a south wind,,winch did not affect- the swimmers in the basin of the dock. ,

The 220yds championship gave the crowd the first taste of a series of sensational performances, Champion, Healy and Freyberg finishing in a lineeach bein.g under New Zealand record time.

Atkinson created a sensation by winning the 220yds breast- stroke championship in world’s .record time, clipping 3 3-ssec off R. Matson’s time of 3min 14-sec. «

Healy Avon the 880yds championship in New Zealand record time. Champion started, but when .leading on equal terms with Healy ricked himself in turning, and gave up at 480yds. . The following wore the results:— 220yds Championship.—M. E. Champion (Auckland! 1, J. R. Heal,- (Wellington) 2, B. 0. Freyberg (Wellington) 3. (Also started: G. Seymour (Napier), E. H. Railey (Canterbury), J. Grant (Haw-era), R. Bell (Auckland), and C. Campbell (Wanganui). A splendid race, won by Ift. with a touch between second and third. Time, 2min 40seb., a Neiv Zealand record.

220yds Breast Stroke. —C. Atkinson (Canterbury) 1, J. W. Oookson (Canterbury) 2,' W. B. .Jessom (Auckland,) 3. Also started: F. Truscott (Canterlury), A. M. Russell (Canterbury), W. '

R. Horton (Auckland). Won by 20 yards. Time, 3min 10 2-ssec., a world’s record. 880yds Championship. —R. ; Healy (Wellington)' 1, .J. F. G. Dodge (Canterbury) 2, ,B. H. Rich (Canterbury) 3. Also started :M. E. Champion (Auckland), Grant (Hawera), Manhire (Canterbury), C. Wilson (Auckland), F. ,J. -Keraot (Auckland). 'Champion ricked himself, and gave up when leading in company with Healy. Dodge was second, 25 yards away, and Rich 5 yards away third. Time, 12min 41 3-ssec, a New Zealand record; The 50yds scratch race was won by Maretfc, of • Auckland, with Emerson, of Nelson, second.
