At the Supreme Court to-day -Mary Hassall, a manned women of about 26 or 30 years of age, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having used an instalment- upon herself Avith the intention of performing an illegal operation. A verdict of not guilty Avas returned, and she Avas discharged. A middle-aged woman, Martha .jane Maxwell, pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging her with having on Narembor 6th, 1909, used upon one Mary Ellen Taylor an instrument- for an illegal purpose. Ad ter hearing the evidence the jury retired, and at 10.30 p.m. returned stating that they were unable to agree. An application for a new trial was granted.
SITTINGS AT PALMERSTON

PALMERSTON X., Fob. 21. _ In the Supreme Court to-day, V . A . B. Pearce was found not guilty oi the theft of cattle. The jury were three and a-quarter hours coming to a decision.
The civil action. Waisli y. Turner, a claim for £5Ol damages tor alleged slander. AA*as settled out of Court. r l he defendant declared that he never intended to accuse plaintiff of cheating at the teams’ poker tournament between clubs from Pshiatua and Ekotaliuna. as had been alleged, and he denied ever having done so.
