Mr. H. J. Day, traffic manager of the Gisborne railway, returned from his holiday on Saturday, and resumed charge, of the section to-day. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr. T. N. Brodriek, and other members of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board are at present in Dannevirke, where to-day they Avill examine annlicants for sections iu Ivumeti Block, and to-morrow will conduct the ballot.
Bob Fitzsimmons, formerly champion heavy-weight boxer, Avas given n great reception on liis return to Timaru, where his "boyhood and youth were spent. A craAvd met him at the station, and escorted him to the theatre, where, before a large gathering the Mayor, Mr J. Cvaigie, M.P., welcomed him as an old Timaru boy w-ho had gained a great name. Air. Oraigie said Fitzsimmons had played tile game fairly and ‘-squarely, and had set- a good example of filial duty by succouring his aged parents in Timaru aa-lich he was in America. Fitzsimmons made a- brief reply, breaking down as he tried to ekpross his thanks for the reception. He was lustily cheered. Tho Boxing Club entertained him at dinner.
