RAILWAY ECONOMY.
CUTTING DOWN FIRE BRIGADE PASSES.
[Special to “Times.”] NAPIER, Feb. *JI
A new aspect of the railway lure question came up at to-days sitting ■ci the Fire Brigades’ Conference, lhe secretarv read a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs stating that £4OO had been placed on the appropriations for the current year financial year <is a. grant to the Association and tliv expenses of the annual conference, but as the meeting this year is only a conference of delegates, this amount seemed somewhat in excess of requirements. It was, therefore, proposed to reduce the grant to £3OO. which wotiid be paid on application. This £3OO was of course in addition to the amount allowed for the railway passes for delegates, attending the conference (£300). Last financial year the expense for these railway pusses amounted to £1387. ' . _ During the discussion, Captain Huggins pointed out that it was no use meeting trouble half-way, and it would be better to aw ait developments before knuckling down to the Government in the matter of railway fares. The Government ran the delegates by ordinary trains, and although the Government stated that the expense was £1387, it was really only a third or a quarter that amount. On the motion of Captain Hansen, seconded by Head Fireman Bengon, it was decided to refer the question to the committee to report at to-morrow s meeting.
