THE S.S. TARAWERA.
STRIKES A SHOAL AT NAPIER.
[Per Press Association.] NAPIER, Feb. 23.
The s.s. Tarawera drawing 16ft forward and 18£t 6in aft, grounded on the eastern side of the Auckland shoal last night when leaving for Gisborne. The chart at this point shows the depth at 16ft. The Harbormaster states that the water was dead low when the vessel grounded. After an hour and ten minutes the Tarawera was floated off by the rising tide and aid of her engines and proceeded on her voyage, apparently undamageck. The mishap occurred just la ter the Tarawera had left the brealMViter at Napier, and a succession of bumps caused the passengers to become alarmed. A quick examination showed that nothing serious had happened, but the Tarawera was delayed till 12.30, and <1 id not arrive here til] 8.30 a.m. yesterday. when Captain F. G. Kenned;’ reported that as a result of further investigations no damage was apparent.
A passenger by the steamer stated to a “Times” reporter yesterday that the Tarawera was out of her course when leaving the wharf at Napier, and passed outside instead of inside the buoy placed to mark the channel. He was of opinion that the boat failed to answer her helm as she should have done, and it appeared as if her steering gear was not working properly.
