NAPIER BOROUGH ELECTION

[Ter Press Association.] NAPIER, Feb. 23. Sixteen candidates have been nominated for the five vacancies on the Napier Borough Council, including four of the disqualified Councillors.

CHARGE AGAINST EX-CONSTABLE

WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. An ex-constable, named McDermott, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court on several charges of alleged forger; 7 of various documents, whereby he obtained sums of money from different people, including a doctor, secretary of a loan company, a minister, a chemist, and others. On one charge he was committed for trial, and remanded on the others.

THE NEW SOUTH WALES TEAM.

The New South Wales rifle team, comprisng 16 men, aririved from Sydney by the Warrimoo to-night to compete at the Dominion rifle meeting, opening at Trentham on March 4th. Three of the visitors are among those chosen to represent the Commonwealth at Bisley this year. CANTERBURY COLLEGE

There was a large crowd at the new chemical laboratory at Canterbury Collette this afternoon, when the ceremony of opening the building was periormeu by Sir Joseph Ward. Addresses were aiven by Sir Joseph Mara, Mr. G. W. Russell. M.P. (chairman of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College), Dr. Evans, and Mr. J. Allen, M.P. Later on a large number of guests were entertained by Mr. Russell at afternoon tea in the College ball. Ihe new laboratory is a very handsome and substantial building. and, as it is equipped with the most modern appliances, it will be highly appreciated by both students and teachers.

PROFESSOR BICKERTOX’S THEORIES. Sir Joseph Ward received a deputation to-day, who urged that the Government should grant assistance to Professor Bickerton to enable him to visit England to place bis partial impact theory before scientists there. Sir Joseph Ward, in reply, said that if the local people were prepared to establish a fund for tlie purpose, he would consider how far the Government could assist bv way of subsidy.

RAILWAY RECEIPTS. DUNEDIN, Feb. 23. Despite the recent increase of railwav fares, the passenger traffic shows no’ falling off. ‘The revenue for the four-weekly period ending the sth instant shows an increase of £7400 over the corresponding, period last year.
