THE BOROUGH ENGINEER.

MR. PATERSON TAKES UP HIS DUTIES.

The recently appointed Borough Engineer, Air. A. J. Paterson, of Wellington, arrived yesterday morning to take up liis duties. He spent the greater portion of the day in looking round the borough, and the provisions of the loan .propsals arid details of the works to he undertaken were fully explained to him by the Mayor. Air. Paterson was also in attendance at the meeting of the Council last night, and was formally welcomed. The Mayor said that on behalf of the Council be wished to extend a welcome to Air. Patersonj and to congratulate him on his appointment. He trusted that Air. Paterson’s stay in Gisborne would lie a long one, and that it would he satisfactory both to himself and to the Council. A lot of important works had to he undertaken, and he felt that in Air. Paterson they had got the rightman. Alany matters would crop up, and the engineer would understand that they were all endeavoring to work in the best interests of the borough. In Mr. Robinson, Air. Paterson would find a Town Clerk /who could not be equalled in any other part of the Dominion, and Air. Alorgan was an excellent overseer. Those in charge of the other departments of the Council were also good and reliable men, and would be able to give Air. Paterson valuable assistance and support. Cr. -Collins also extended a welcome and congratulations to Air. Paterson. Ho was, he said, perfectly sure that the Council would assist him in every possible way, and give him loyal support.

Air. Paterson responded very briefly, thanking the speakers for their kind words. He trusted that he would fulfil his duties to the satisfaction of the Council, and that his work would merit approval.
