“I left Wellington when it was a. collection of shanties on the beach, and return to find a luxurious city,” is the comment of Sir John flatty Take, the eminent medical specialist, who is revisiting New Zealand after an absence of nearly fifty years. Sir John who arrived by the Taimu from England on Saturday, intends leaving Wellington in a. few days for Wanganui to revisjt old' scenes. According to the New Zealand “Times” lie is making the trip on account of his health. On Monday night he was an honored guest at the opening of the British Medical Association (New Zealand branch) conference. Sir John Take came to New Zealand with the Imperial troops during the Maori war. lie has since become famous as a specialist in the treatment of the mentally afflicted. Mr. C. N. Bacyertz has been offered by tile committee of the' Grand National Eisteddfod of Australasia, the position of adjudicator in the eleeutionary, vocal and! choral selections at this year’s festival at Ballarat (reports the “Otago Daily Times”). This may be regarded as a compliment of the highest order to Mr. Baevertz, who'adjudicated in the elocutionary classes at last year’s competitions. ,Mr Baeyertz lias also been asked to assist the committee in the select : on of Waitable- r-bm-u s for both j the elocutionary and the literary sections.
