There are few more curious cases in connection with the testing of ships’ officers for color vision than that of Mr 'Prattles, which is occupying the attention of a special court appointed by the Board of Trade. Mr Trattles began his sea career in the forecastle, and meritoriously worked liis way up until he was qualified to become a first mate. Then the question of his color vision, which had from time to time been raised, presented an obstacle. Three times, according to the statement of liis counsel, Mr Trattles has been declared to be color-blind, and three times has he satisfied his examiners. The special court recently constituted, and consisting of Sir Francis Mowatt and Mr Dickinson, police magistrate, heard the evidence of Sir William Abney. and others that- Mr Trattles is what is known as red blind. In view, however, of the evidence of a number of captains that Mr Trattles’ ability in picking up and correctly designating lights at sea leaves nothing to be desired, the Court ordered a special practical test. This was carried out on the Thames by Commander Wilson-Barker, of His Majesty’s ship Worcester, who affirms that he hois no" fault to find with Mr Trattles, whose color vision he regards as normal. The judgment of the Court as anticipated with considerable interest.
