COMPENSATION TO PUBLIC
HOUSES.
A total of £250,000 compensation has been awarded in regard to ninety-one public houses, the licenses of which were extinguished at the London session. The money is -payable out of the trade special fund.
23 KILLED BY AN AVALANCHE
An avalanche at Auresdal, Iceland, killed twenty-three persons.

Violet Charlesworth and her mother have been sentenced to live years each for fraud.

The Estimates include £20,000 for aid to Ca-ptain Scott’s Antarctic expedition.
PROJECTED OPERATIONS IN -SOMALILAND.
A sum cf £57,000 appears on the Imperial Estimates for expenditure in Somaliland owing to the Mullah’s hostility.
THE LORDS QUESTION IN SAXONY
BERLIN, Feb. 23
There is a constitutional conflict in the Lower House in Saxony because the Government refuses to grant a demand for reform of the Upper -House by admitting representatives of the great industries. A dissolution is threatened.
THE AUSXRO-GERMAN ALLIANCE
The German press welcomes Baron A-erent-hal with effusive cordiality, and refers to the past and future value of an Austro-German alliance.
MOISTURE IN BUTTER
COPENHAGEN, Feb. 23
The Danish Government has introduced a Bill prohibiting the export of butter containing more than 16 per cent, of moisture.
GALE IN NORFOLK ISLAND

A strong gale from the eastward has been raging for the last two days. The glass is exceptionally low.
THE BRITISH LABOR EXCHANGE

In the House of Commons Mr. Sydney Buxton stated that the Labor Exchanges had made a promising start, and had already filled several thousands of situations.
A CENSUS OF BRITISH HORSES. Mr. Haldane announced that during the last two months the police have taken a census of horses in the United Kingdom. When it was complete' the War Office would communicate it to the Territorials 7 Associations.

AN ANGLO-GERMAN BANQUET
The King and Queen attended a banquet at the German Embassy in honor of Prince Henry of Prussia, and there was a brilliant assembly.
