AUSTRALASIAN FOUR-OARED CHAMPIONSHIP. EASY WIN FOB WANGANUI. United Press Association—Copyright {.Received Feb. 20. Li.3o a.in.) HOBART, Feb. 24. The four-oared boat r.uw, postponed from yesterday owing t<> the weather conditions being unfavorable; cam© off to-day over the championship course of three miles, on the upper readies of the Derwent. The water was smooth, but the wind was against the crews. The positions taken up were: Xugambie, on the eastern shore, then Derwent, Wanganui, Sandy Bay, Wide Bay, Blenheim, and Adelaide. A good start was effected, Queensland being first to catch the water, and obtained a slight lead before any distance was travelled. After 200 yards had been passed. Wanganui jacked Queensland up, Nagamhie following suit, then Blenheim and Derwent. Wanganui then went to the front, rowing a fine even- stroke, and putting every ounce of weight into it they were rajiidly outpacing their opponents, Nagarnbic being next, then Blenheim and Derwent falling back, with Queensland going right to *he rear, Adelaide being last. The farther they went the bigger the gap they made from Nagambie, while Blenheim was catching Victoria. Derwent also put in some fine work, the order then being: Wanganui, three or four lengths ahead, then Nagamhie, Blenheim and Derwent almost in a line for second place. During the third mile Wanganui gave no chance to their opponents to get near them, having half a dozen lengths between them. Blenheim’s condition then commenced to he too good for Victoria and Derwent. They went into second place, "While the pace told its tale on Derwent, who fell back to fourth place. There was no further alteration, Wanganui winning by six lengths, Blenheim being second, Victoria third, Derwent fourth. Queensland a bad fifth, Sandy Bay. and then Adelaide. Time, 20min 42 2-ose-c.
Cheers, hearty and prolonged, greeted the winners from the crowd on the steamers, and they were renewed hs they reached Bridgewater. Members of the crews seen subseouonrly. admitted that the race was a hard one, and that the pace set by Wanganui gave them no chance. Nagambie were the favorites, and Derwent next. To-night the winners were presented with the handsome shield specially made for the race, while each member of the crew were given a gold medal.
