THE FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Despite very heavy rain, there was a long cortege at the funeral of the late Bishop Lenihan this afternoon. The Mayor and City Councillors and representatives of almost every public body, as well as cf the leading business institutions, were present, in addition to many visiting priests and prominent members of the laity. "I he cortege was over a mile long, and included the Garrison Band. On arrival at the Cathedral the coffin was placed in front of the sanctuary, and a short service held. The Cathedral was packed to its utmost capacity. The body will lie in state at the Cathedral until 12 o'clock to-night. The coffin will then be closed down, and will be guarded during the night by members of the Roman Catholic societies. The burial will take place in the Cathedral to-morrow morning, after the requiem mass, which commences at 10 o'clock. A crypt has been excavated immediately in front of the high altar at the sanctuary rails, and here the body will be interred. Masses will commence at 6 o’clock to-morrow morning, and will be celebrated from then till 7.30 a.in. Before the 10 o’clock mass the priests of the diocese, together with the visiting priests, of whom there are a great number, will eliant one nocturir of the sacred office with lauds. The solemn requiem mass will follow, the celebrant being the Right Rev. Bishop Grimes, with the Rev. Father Brodie as deacon and the Rev. Father Darbv as suit-deacon. Both Fathers Brodie and Darby were ordained by the late Bishop Lenihan. The . Most Rev. Archbishop Redwood, of Wellington. will preside, and the assistantpriest will he the Rev. Father Mahoney, who was the first born New Zealander to enter the ranks of the priesthood. The assistants to the throne -will he the Very Rev. Monsignor Gillan. the Very Revs. Dean Hackett and Dean Light-heart. The Rev. Father -Holbrook will ibe master cf ceremonies. Archbishop Redwood will speak briefly, and the body of the late Bishop will then he interred.
