BRUTAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL. rren PxtKsa Association.] AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. A girl 13 years of age was attacked by a' man at AYarkwortk. and assa*n r eu so seriously that she had to be removed, to the Auckland Hospital. The girl s cries drew the attention of a young man named Oakes, who rushed to her assistance. The assailant is alleged to have threatened Oakes with a knife. AA'hen Oakes rushed at- him he bolted and got clear away. This is the third known outrage committed in Rodney district within a short period. Parents of children are anxious. The police arrested a man named William J. F. Moore, and charged him with the offence. Aloore appears at the Court here to-morrow.

A meeting of men who served in the Seventh Contingent in South Africa, under Colonel Porter, decided last night to form an association on the linos of that of the First Contingent. Colonel Porter was elected president. A letter was received from Cord Kitchener, expressing appreciation of the work of the Seventh Contingent at the battle of Botliasburg.

STREET BETTING

CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 25,

Judge Sim gave judgment this morning in the appeals, Peter Grant and Edgar Neal, from the Alngistrnte’s decision convicting them of street- betting. Grant’s appeal was allowed, and the conviction set- aside. As- the ease was a police -prosecution, on order was made as to costs. Neal’s appeal was disallowed. Appellant was ordered to pay costs.
