THE LATE BISHOP LENIHAN.

INTERRED AT ST. PATRICK'S

CATHEDRAL

rPisu Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. The remains of Bishop Lenihan were interred at St. Patrick’s Cathedral this morning. The building was packed. The Hon. J. Carroll represented the Ministry. Dr Neligan. Anglican Bishop.' was also present. A solemn requiem mass was celebrated by Bishop Grimes, and an address delivered.by Archbishop Redwood. The interment followed, the body being placed in the crvpt directly in front of the altar.

THE QUESTION OF A SUCCESSOR

A meeting of the clergy of the Roman Catholic diocese of Auckland was held to-day to nominate a- successor to the late Bishop Lenihan. The Most Rev. Archbishop Redwood presided, and 14 clergy were entitled to vote. The ballot for Dignissimus favored the Very Rev. H. W. Cleary, D.D., editor of the “New Zealand Tablet” ; that for Dignior the Very Rev. Father Brodie (Waihi); and that for Dignus the Very Rev. Dean Haekett (parish priest of Paeora). The ballots were practically unanimous. These names will be submitted for the consideration of the New Zealand Hierarchy and then forwarded to Rome.

(The procedure in connection with the election of a bishop in the Roman Catholic Church is, briefly, as follows: The priests of the diocese, who possess certain qualifications, the principal of which is having worked for seven years within its bounds, recommend three candidates, who are -graded as “Dignus,” “worthy” (of the office of bishop); “Dignior”—“more worthy”; and “Dignissimus” —“most worthy.” The bishops of the province of. which the diocese forms paalso select three names, which are similarly .graded; It is not necessary- . that any., df. those should be included in the three recoinmeinded by the priests. The two ; .]ists are forwarded to Rome, but. it dees not follow that any one of the clerics therein named will be appointed., though, of course, due consideration is given to the recommendations. It is understood that the late Bisfhop Lenihan was selected as Dignissimus both by the bishops and by the priests.)
