A splendid coal seam has been found at Katoomba. It is believed to bo a continuation of the Lithgow seam.
AN OVER-TURNED BOAT. The steamer Thist-leroy, from the Tyne, reports that .during a heavy gale on January' 23rd, in latitude 39 south longitude'2l east, she passed an overturned boat painted white. It was covered with marine growth. There was no sign of wreckage in the vicinity.

There have been heavy floods in TorowA* district, with washawavs on the railway which practically isolate Broken Hill.

'The .population of the State on 31st December last was 1,645,445, an increase of 40,536 on the previous-year. The excess of' births.over, deaths -was 27 930, and the excess of arrivals over departures 12,506. ■
SENSATIONAL “HOLD-UP” IN . QUEENSLAND. • BRISBANE, Fob. 25. A mail entered the Albion branch of the Queensland Bank and bred point blank at the teller, evidently with blank cartridge. The teller rushed for a- revolver. The man .jumped over the counter and grabbed 70 sovereigns from a gold tray and then escaped.
