A conference of delegates of butter factories resolved to form a company with £50,000 capital, with the primary object of purchasing butter boxes, or, if necessary, manufacturing them. It was pointed out that action was necessary owing to the excessive charges manufacturers were imposing on them. The chairman stated that the advance to Is 8d .represented a tax of 16s 8d per ton. One delegate to the conference, who represented 75 per cent, of the butter output of the State, said he bad made inquiries, and found that while there was ample timber in New Zealand for several years to oome to supply all requirements, it was a question for thorn to decide whether it was wise to entirely depend on that source. While in Europe he made an inquiry in regard .to a supply of suitable timber, which vias .practically inexhaustible. The first shipment of these boxes ujpuld arrive in a week or two. They were of Polish timber in Northern Europe. Even in Japan there were some timbers which appeared suitable. These auxiliary supplies could be landed here at a lower rate than from New Zealand.
