COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ AND WAREHOUSEMENS’ ASSOCIATION

AUCKLAND, Feb. 28. At the. Wellington and Auckland Commercial travellers’ and Warehousemens’ Association, Mr. ranger said he confidently anticipated that Dunedin would eventually join. It Vas resolved that the headquarters be Wellington. A motion affirming the desirability of affiliation to the Australian Association was passed. Mr. H. C. Tewsley was elected president and Mr. Turnbull treasurer.
THE OLD AND THE NEW. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 28. The local volunteer corps celebrated the death of the volunteer movement and the birth of the compulsory system this evening by a big smoke concert, at which all the corps were well represented, and the veterans were also present. They marched in a procession l round the town, and afterwards spent the evening with toasts and music. Speeches were made regretting the death of the old system from a sentimental standpoint, but in favor of the new system as a benefit to the British race.
AN ILLEGAL- LICENSE,
NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 28
Mr. Fitzherbert, S.M.,' gave a reserved judgment.tins morning in the case Police v. Sims, licensee of the Tariki Hotel, for selling liquor at Waitara races without a license.- Sims obtained a conditional license from the Stratford Licensing Committee, but the police held that that committee had no authority to issue a license, as the racecourse was not within the boundaries of its jurisdiction, though the Tariki Hotel is. The S.M. upheld this view, and fined Sims £5 and costs.
BLUE MOUNTAIN RUN BALLOT
BLENHEIM, Feb. 23
The ballot for Blue Mountain run took place this morning. The run went to Miss Violet Boyd, of Kaikoura. Subsequently the Leslie and Ivekerangu grazing runs were offered by* auction, but failed to bring the upset price.
ASHBURTON WATERWORKS SCHEME.
ASHBURTON. Feb. 23
The Ashburton Borough Council has accepted 1 the following tenders for contracts for the projected water works:' Water works supply pipes. Mason, Strutkers and Co., Christchurch, £5593 17s 2d; engines and pump, John Chambers and -Son, Dunedin, £2459 10s: erection of water-tower, Scott Bros.; Christchurch, £23-50 ; laying pipes, Russell and Co., Ashburton, £1915 6s Id. The total sum of tenders amount to £12,648 13s 3d.
DUNEDIN TOPICS. DUNEDIN, Feb. 28. The Arbitration Court held a sitting in Dunedin to-day. A number of parties wer e added to the carters’ award, and others were exempted. Three compensation eases were disposed of, and the Court also fixed an apportionment of funds 'among the members of a family.
Mr. Justice Sim was engaged in Dunedin several days this week hearing civil business.
The annual meeting of the Otago branch of the Victoria- League was held this afternoon. Tile Mayor, Mr. J. H. Walker, presided* Speeches were made by members of Parliament concerning the. work done by the —eague, also detailing its objects and social benefits, and it was resolved to make an effort to still further extend its operations by inviting men to co-operate in. the work. The Mayor of Dunedin was reelected patron and Mrs. T. M. Hoeken president. At the Police Court to-day Dr. Riley was charged with motoring over a prohibited road in. Taieri County when proceeding to an urgent case. After argument the Magistrate said the ques_ tion to be considered was whether the defendant was justified on the ground of urgency in breaking the by-law. Ho would not say ho was, and therefore convicted the defendant, and fined him one shilling.
