The Wellington College Board < f Governors proceeded to-day to- the election of a chairman. At last .meeting Mr. A. doB. Brandon declined r election ns chairman unless given the power of veto over any vote < i expenditure carried by the Board. . f which he might disapprove. The muter was tin'll deferred till to-day. when "ir. Brandon was again proposed. Hon. Dr. Findlay asked whether tie appointment carried with it the conditions insisted on last month. Mr. Brandon said that since last meeting he had given the matter a great d<'d of thought, and had come to the conelusion that perhaps he was asking more than the Board might be expected to give. At the same time, in accepting the chairmanship he wished to say that if ho saw any proposal for expenditure which, in Ids opinion, would entail reference to the bank or to the Government, ho would oppose ; t, and if defeated he would resign. Dr. Find lav said the ipcsitirn taken up by Mr. Brandon should not lie taken up by any chairman. It amounted to a threat, that if the Board opposed its judgment to that of the chairman it would involve his resignation. Mr. Brandon said he was not making- a threat, but if the Board undertook anv work which would ultimately result in its not being able to pay for without assistance, lie could not possibly continue as chnirnu n and manage the finances of the Board. M r Brandon was then elected without dissent.
