Sir Ernest Shaekleton, according to reports published in the Australian papers, has decided to turn his attention to a new field of exploration, he lias arranged to deliver a- series of lectures in the United- States during the present month, and it is stated that after the completion of this engagement ho will lead an expedition into Northern Alaska. The .“Lyttelton Times” siatos:—“He will find plenty of scope for his energy and powers of endurance if he goes to Northern Alaska, which consists of nearly half a million square- miles of territory, occupied by a few roving tribes of Escjuimo.s and Indians. Tlie vast expanse of country, broken by mountain spurs- and innumerable lakes, swamps and watercourses, is largely unexplored, and occasional trappers and hunters have brought south fascinating stories of mineral wealth lying there. A man living in Canada ‘to-day tells that years ago, when on a hunting expedition, he stumble ! across an enormous deposit of practically pure tin at a spot not far from Behring Sea, and he suggested that with a stout whaling vessel and dog sledges an expedition might wrest a fortune from the frozen wilds in a single- season, for Sir Ernest Shackleton’. who is nothing if not practical, would he certain to take with him a competent geologist, and he would pro. lnhlv have no difficulty in securing financial support from some of the wealthy Americans and Canadians who have been interesting themselves in the commercial developments: of the northern portion of their continent.
