COUNTRY NEWS.

TAREWA. [From Our Own Correspondent.] A meeting of subscribers to the private telephone was hold in Mr. Tullock’s woodshed on Monday afternoon, 28th February. Present: Messrs. L. C. Tul. lock, A. Rattray, E. Coop, M. J. Job. jin, A. McPherson, G. Reynolds, _J. Richardson, F. A. Denton, J. Austin, W. McKain, C. E. Stewart, M. Shaw, B. Aislabie, and J. Reynolds. Mr. M. J, Joblin presided. The telephone committee’s report and statement of accounts were read and adopted. The. balance-sheet showed receipts £232 12s lOd ; expenditure, £223 10s; cash in hand, £9 os lOd. It was reported that the telephone was not working satisfactorily, owing to some of the branch lines being too close to the main line, and in one locality connected with it. After considerable discussion it was proposed by Mr. Stewart that proceedings be taken against any telephone subscriber who deliberately connects his' branch wire with the main line. Seconded by Air. Joblin, and carried. Proposed by Mr. Coop, that notice be given to subscribers using the main poles to place an extra arm on each pole to carry their wires. Seconded by Air. Shaw, and carried. On the motion of Air. AlcKain, seconded by Mr. G. Reynolds, it was decided that all extra wire on the main poles must be placed not less than 18 inches from the main wire. Proposed by Air. Coop, that new subscribers to the telephone pay as follows: Private dwellings, three guineas; public places, four guineas; annual subscription. five shillings. Seconded' by Mr." Rattray, and carried. Proposed by Mr. McKain, that Air. Austin be authorised to repair the switches at Tarewa, and also that some lightning arrestors be procured and placed at Taxewa and Alorerc.. Seconded by Air. Joblin, and carried. On the motion of Air Stewart, seconded by Mr. Coop, the election, of a new telephone committee, took place, and the following subscribers were declared duly elected for the- ensuing twelve months, viz., M. J. Joblin, LCoop, J. Austin, C. E. Stewart, and l J. Reynold's. At a. meeting, of the new committee Mr. Reynolds .was elected chairman, and Mr. Joblin secretary and treasurer.
