The Hon. Mr. T. Mackenzie visited Akaroa to-day and met- several deputations, which brought before him several matters chiefly of local interest. One request made was that the Government should endeavor to acquire t-lie site of the Britomart monument erected on the spot where the British flag was first hoisted. At present it stands partly on private land, the owner of which, prior to his death, expressed his intention to give dlie necessary area to give public access to the monument, but did not carry out his intention, and his trustees consider they are not in a position to give the land. ’I lie Minister said he recognised that the monument was a national one, and undertook to communicate with the. trustees on the subject of the acquisition of the necessary area. The Minister left for Wellington to-night.
