FLAXMILLING CONFERENCE.
A DEADLOCK OVER AWARD
rPi-.n Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., March 11
The conference between representatives of the Flaxmillers’ Association and the Flaxmill Employees’ Union, with Mr Scott, of the Arbitration Court, to v/liich the Arbitration Court referred matters in dispute regarding the flax award, with a. view to the settlement ol’ a sliding scale of wages, has. proved abortive, after sitting one night and throughout to-day. The chief point of difference ivas the question of unconditional preference, insisted on by the Union, and the matter of a standard wage for scutchers which was taken as crucial. The mind's could not concede unconditional preference, but were willing finally to concede a somewhat similar preference clause to that at present. Regarding wages, tno millers desired to reduce scutchers from 28s to 245. The Union were ultimately willing to agreed to 265, if uncondition, al preference were allowed. As an agreement could not be come to, the whole matter of a new award will have t-o lie referred back to the Arbitration Court.
