ROWING.
POVERTY BAY CLUB
The final in the sculling event for Mr R. T. Seymour’s gold medal was rowed' off on Saturday evening last. Everything was in the' scullers’ favor, the river calm a-nd a full tide, under Which conditions an excellent race was witnessed.
Soeats, with eleven seconds handicap and getting a. good start, gained about four lengths off Webb, who, although not going off too well, had, at the first bend, .'nearly caught has man, about a length separating them. Passing the junction of the two rivers both men were racing level, which position they maintained to the bridge. Through there Webb slackened down and Scea.ts, taking advantage of this, kept •an pulling liard, and a little further on, again had a length to the good. At this juncture the race became very exciting, it being the general opinion that Scents would win. A couple of hundred yards from home Webb, who was still rowing steadily, again began to lesson the distance between himself and his opponent, when, later on he quickened up and passing the Tuatea, had a half-length’s lead, which he had increased to a length at the finishing post, giving him a win by the above distance. GISBORNE CtLUB. The final; in this .club, for the President’s trophies, took place on Saturday evening, between Payne, Wheeler, Quigley and O’Meara and McLean, Curtis. Miller and deLautour.
