Shelton and Co. advise: “The following are the figures for shipments of mutton and lamb for Fcbruarv, 1910:—Mutton, New Zealand 195,000, Australian, 226,000, Argentine 164,000, total 585,000; lamb, New Zealand 419,000, Australia 52,000, Argentine 28,000. total 499,000. shipments for February were:—Muttan 612)000 and lamb 464.000. From the above figures it is evident that the. unfavorable conditions prevailing locally in regard to lamb fattening not general throughout the Dominion. FROZEN MEAT. Writing under date London, January 28, Messrs. AYeddol and Co. report as follows: — . Mutton. —New Zealand. Arrivals during the past fortnight amount to 25,260" carcases. The demand lias not been cpiite so good, except -perhaps for Canterbury descriptions, which continue scarce and relatively firm. Latches 48/64 lbs. realise 4Jd to 4]d, and tor the heavier weights 4d. North Island sheep of best Quality and pi line Southlands are a slow sale at 3gd. oeeondary carcases are distinctly easier, and cannot now be quoted at over 34cl to 3]d, according to weight. Ewes .are a quiet sale at about- Sjjd per lb. Lamb. —Arrivals during the fortnight amount to 109,084 carcases from Australia 3000 carcases from River Plate, and from New Zealand 14,355 carcases. The demand rtill remains good, but m face of recr-ni heavy arrivals and lower values of mutton, many holders have been desirous of making .headway with sales, and consequently prices are slightlv easier than those ruling a fort-night-‘ago. .At present low rates the lambs are moving out freely, and there is no indication of stocks accumulating. At the close, however, there is a much better feeling in the market, and values are again a shade dearer. There has been a, good demand for the few new season 3 New Zealand lambs available, in spite or the wide difference in price between them and the Australians. North Island lambs of __ good weights have boon sold at 43d to od per lb., and the very light weights down to 4fd per lb. A few Canterbury lambs have realised 5d to ojd per lb. Beef.— Frozen— Arrivals during the past two weeks have been moderate, comprising 2131 quarters from Australia. 10.296 quarters from New Zealand, and 30.13 S quarters from the River Plate. The market opened weak and quiet, but with a spell of cold weather and falling off 0 f chilled supplies the demand became much improved, ana values again picked up. New Zealand hindquarters 3J-d, forequarters «Jd. The blitter market is very firm. > he demand has been exceptional and exceeds the supply. The stock of New Zealand butter in hand is almost exhausted and is firmly held in .second hands. The average price of choice New Zealand butter is 130 per cent., Australian and Argentine 1265, Danish 1365, Siberian 1255. . The cheese market is firm. Prices have advanced and buyers are cautious. '/Finest New Zealand white cheese averages 61s, colored 59s 6d. The hemp market is lifeless, with no change in prices. The stock of New Zealand hemp in hand is 108 tons. The weeks output of hemp from, Manila is 1.9,090 bales. Last week’s quotations -i.vere: On spot, New Zealand good fair £25, fair £24, Manila, fair current, £25. Forward, good fair £24 15s fair £23 15:?, Manila £24. Tlie cocksfoot seed market is quiet but firm. Stocks in hand are 'moderate. New Zealand bright clean 171 b seed 72s per -cwt. The kauri gum market is firm with improved demand. Ordinary to fail, three-quarters scraped, £8 10s per cwt., fair half-scraped, £0 os: best fair to good, pale and amber, scraped, £8 10s;
brown, half to three-quarter scraped, £9 2s 6d, brown -piercings, common good, 455. ~ The wheat market is quiet. Prices are 'slightly weaker. The oat market is quiet, with small business and a. tendency in favor of buyers. New Zealand sparrow-bills, ex granary, mbs per quarter of lbs., New Zealand /Danish 17s 3d per quarter of 320 lbs.
The pea market is steady, without animation, New Zealand partridge 55s per 504 lbs. The bean market is firm owing to reduced supplies. New Zealand beans, old crops, 40s per 504 lbs. The hops market remains firm, with a. general active demand and favorable prospects. The arrivals of River Plate mutton and lamb at the United Kingdom ports duriitg February, were as follows: —London, carcases mutton 46,877, lamb 3452; Liverpool 175,093 and 8871; Hull, 1043 and 1452; Cardiff, 8438 and 987; Southampton, 5045 and 3386; Irish- ports, 3437 and 44. Total, mutton 239,931, and lamb 18,222. (Arrivals during February, 1909, were: mutton 311,56.1 carcases, lamb 50,133 carcases.) HOME MARKETS. Unitkd Piikss Association* —Copyright LONDON March 13. Wool: The Bradford market is firm at un nil an god rates. There is a strong demand for merinos. The London sales included <St. Helen’s, highest price. 141 d, average 13d; Pet one, 12-Jd and lOfd. There was a good sale. There was a better selection of crossbred suitable for America, whicli realised high prices. Merinos were very firm. Tlie. quantity catalogued to date is 49,98/ bales; sold 46,357. Wheat: (Markets are depressed, with a general downward tendency. The weekly ship incuts are heavy, especially from the Argentine. Excellent crop prospects are reported from India. There is little inquiry for cargoes. _ A sum of 38s 9d was asked for Victorian and South Australian per steamers and sailers, February-March shipment; 38s 3d for New South Wales sailer Febru-ry-March; 38s for steamer parcels, March shipment. Smaller sailers of Australian, spot, at 42s 6d. New Zealand is exhausted. New wheat, (March steamer shipment is offering at 37s e.i.f., which is Is to Is 6d above buyers’ ideas. Butter: (Market exceedingly strong. Danish 1.34-s to 1365, choicest Australian 126 sto 1275, secondary 1225, choicest New Zealand 126 s to 128 s. Iho market- is cleared. Importers are asking 120 s for Corinthic's cargo, which is* due on Monday. Cheese: Firm. New Zealand colored 595. white 61s.
