THE NEWCASTLE MINES.
United Press Association —Copyright NEWCASTLE, March To. Five Newcastle mines are still idle pending the settlement of minor troubles. The Seamen’s Union during the coal and coastal strike paid £11,500 to members out of work' in addition to £67 paid to other unions. NORTHERN COLLIERIES AT WORK. (Received March 16, 12.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 15. All the Northern colieries, with the exception of the Hetton, are at work. That colliery will resume to-morrow. A fleet of vessels, all waiting coal, are now being moved' under the cranes. ACTION OF VICTORIAN RAILWAY COMMISSIONERS. MELBOURNE, March 15. The Railway Commissioners, by using Powlett River coal, will save £30,000 per annum, while' £35,000 in coal freights will be earned 1 this year. It is estimated tO‘ earn £75,000 by this means next- year.’
