HARBOR BOARD.

SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Harbor Beard was held yesterday afternoon to consult with Air. Marehant, C.E., regarding the extension of the breakwater. There were present Messrs. J. Town, ley (chairman), Matthewson, Lysnar, Clarke, Kells, and the Hon. Captain Tucker. 'file Chairman said that the meeting had been called to let Air. Marehant lay .some information before the Board regarding the procuring of stone. Mr. Alarchant said lie. had inspected several places where he thought they could get suitable stone. There was a point on the hill behind the Cook monu_ ment where, he thought suitable papa rock existed, hut. this place was a borough reserve. There was another place, a sandstone peak, about 20 chains nearer than Pa Hill, and if they could get sandstone there it would sav e putting a tramline around the Pa. Hill, where the sea came up. If these two places were not suitable. they would have to revert to the original proposal to obtain the papa rook from Pa Hill. He proposed the members should inspect the sites. The members of the. Board tbn drove to the monument and Air. Marehant pointed out that lie thought if a 60tt drive was. put in, they could see if suitable stone was- obtainable. At the sandstone peak he also thought they should put in a drive to eee if stone in sufficient quantity was obtainable. ] Q!n returning, the Chairman: said they had to decide on what to do. The first thing, lie thought, was the putting in the drives. It was desirable to have the stone as near as possible, lie thought they might authorise the drives to be put in where Mr, Marehant had pointed out. It would not be a very costly experiment, but he thought it should be. done before they went any further in the matter. He proposed that Air. Alarchant should indicate the points where, he wanted drives, to the overseer, Air. AlcLoed. Air. Lysnar: If they start testing at the hill near the monument they might bring down a good deal of the hill. Air. Alarchant was of opinion that there was no danger as the drives could be filled in. . Air Lysnar said he quite approved of the test taking place anywhere near

Pa Hill, hut he objected to the Boai;cI doing anything near the monument •sit© without the authority ‘ of the Borough Council. He thought it was just a question whether they should get the stone from the sandstone peak, near Pa Hill, or .go round the hill. The Chairman said they could apply to the Borough Council for permission to put in the drive at the monument. Capt. Tucker did' not think that the. Borough Council could have any objection to allowing the Board to conduct the experiment. Mr Lysnar pointed out that Mrs Carroll had given the reserve to the borough as a nucleus of a botanical garden. The raising of the money may been authorised by the Borough, and nothing should be done to impair the hill.

Capt. Tucker rose to a point of order. He did net think there was need for discussion such as this at the Harbor Board meetings. Mr Lysnar was not the Borough Council, and they should leave it to them. They simply wanted to ask permission. The Chairman then proposed that application should be made to the Borough Council for permission to test on the hill near the monument, and that Mr Marehant should point out to the overseer where he wanted the drives put, and the work should bo proceeded with. The Hon. Capt. Tucker seconded the proposal;, which was carried.. The Chairman said that information as to the sueesvj. or otherwise of the experiments, would be forwarded to Mr Marehant. Mr Marehant said lie was in favor of having the work of extension carried out by day work, and ’not by contract. hut thought it might be advisable to call for tenders first. If they called for tenders it would- be very necessary to have the experiment for procuring stone carried, out. The "meeting then adjourned.
