NEW THEATRE AT WAIPAWA. WAIPAWA, March. 16. A municipal theatre, with seating accommodation for a thousand people, was formally opened by the Mayor yesterday. RAWER A WINTER SHOW. HAWERA, March. 18. R. AY. Bond, New Plymouth, was the successful tenderer for the erection of the Hawera winter show buildings, at £3630. ANTI-OPIUM. WELLINGTON, March 16. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Anti-Opium Association was held last night. An address was. given by Mr Yung Liang Hwang, Chinese Consul, 'pointing out the evils of the opium traffic. A resolution was adopted condemning the traffic. WELLINGTON MURDER CASE. On a charge of murder of Christopher Smith on 4th March, Robert Corkill was again remanded to-day till next Wednesday. CASE AGAINST JOHN NORTON. Before the Chief Justice to-day, Robert Bertling, superintendent of the Wellington Zoo. claimed £2OOO damages from John Norton, proprietor of “Truth” for alleged libel. The case was tried before a special jury. Defendant denied that the words complained of reflected on the plaintiff in his .occupation, or had been published falsely or maliciously, or were libellous or defamatory, and that in their natural ordinary signification they were true in substance and in fact. It wao stated an apology had been published', which was said by plaintiff to be no apology at all, but a case of adding insult to injury. The case was net concluded when the Court rose for the day. NEW INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL ACT. The 'provisions of the Industrial Schools Amendment Act were brought into force in Wellington for the first time to-day. The Act empowers the police to bring any uncontrollable child before a magistrate to be committed to an industrial school. The present case was that of a girl 141 years of age, who bad rnn away from heme thrice. Her mother stated that the girl was beyond her control. The girl was committed to St. Joseph’s Orphanage. A TECHNICAL POINT. CHRISTCHURCH, March. 16. Mr Bishop, 6.M., gave judgment-in the case of the -Canterbury Jockey Club v. Archie Anderson, who was charged with being unlawfully on Christoliuixih racecourse on February 3rd. The Magistrate said that in his opinion the regulations were not made in accordance with the Act, ancl therefore must he held to be ultra- vires. The point on which he had reserved his decision •was as to whether the section made regulations, when once gazetted, sufficient evidence. After considering it," he had arrived at the conclusion that it did not effect the position at all. The regulations were initially bad, and the Gazette notice did not make them conclusive evidence. The cases quoted by Mr Stringer were all distinguishable from this particular one, and he could not find authority that justified in any way in refusing to go behind the initial badness of the regulations. The case would be dismissed with costs. In regard to the other cases, if the club were going to appeal, he would ad jo urn them, but if not, be would dismiss them. Mr Wright, who appeared .for the club, said he would ask for an adjournment for a Aveek. Hie cases Avere accordingly adjourned. AN ALLEGED ROBBER. OF CHURCHES. Charles Ronald McPherson avos charged at the Magistrate’s Court today Avitli having broken and entered the Church of Christ on the 7th. inst., and with stealing 15s from 1 ' the collection box, and also Avith .having, on tire 9th inst., broken and entered the Spiritualists’ Church and stolen an overcoat and .fountain pen. He reserv. ed his defence, and Avas committed tothe (Supreme Court for trial. LIFEBOAT ASSOCIATION. GREYMOUTH, March 16. As a result ,of Sunday’s boating fatality a representative -meeting, held last- night, decided to form a- Lifeboat •Association, and to convene a public meeting o.f citizens for, Friday. The proposal Avas most cordially taken up.
