HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARDS.
ELECTION RETURNS. COOK DISTRICT. The election of members for the Cook Hospital and Charitable Aid Board passed off cpiietly yesterday under the supervision of Mr. H. M. Porter as returning officer. BOROUGH. In the Borough the voting was fairly heavy, but the electors in the counties did not take the same amount of interest in the contest. For the Borough the Rev. W. Lamb, Messrs W. D. Lysnar and R. Johnston, and Dr. Collins were elected. The following were the numbers of votes polled by the respective candidates: —

ADDRESSES OF CANDIDATES.
After the declaration of the poll some of the candidates addressed a. number of the electors. Rev. W 7. Lamb, who was received with applause, said that- he wished to return thanks to those who, -by their votes, had placed him at the head of the poll, and especially those members of the 'Friendly Societies who had nominated him and worked for his return. So far as he personally was concerned, his hope was that those who had been elected would ail be able to work together in. the best interests of the hospital and in the matter of charitable aid. He referred to the statement- which had been made that it required business men to be able to successfully administer the matter of charitable aid, and claimed that .those who knew him best would know than he would always do what he thought best in such cases. At any rate lie held that it would be better to err on the side of charity and kindliness than on the other side, and that any person in need deserved the help of the oommunitv within certain limitations. Mr Lamb also made reference to the possibility of inharmonious relations between certain members of the new Board, and expressed his intention of doing all in his power to maintain, at all times, peace and good feeling. Mr Robert. Johnston also returned thanks for his election, and in doing so referred to the' fact that lie was not altogether without experience having hen perviously a member of the Hospital Trustees for 9 years. Ho expressed his intention of doing all he could for all classes the community, while especially thanking the members of the Friendly Societies, who had done so much towards ensuring his return. Mr Cecil Lewis said that, as one o-r the unsuccessful candidates, he desired to thank these who had supported him.
1 As a Friendly Society member he felt satisfied that they had got two out of tlieir three nominees in. It had beenshewn, he contended, that in the. opinion of the public there were within the ranks’ of the Friendly Societies men quite as capable of conducting municipal affairs'as there were -outside of those bodies. So far as he was personally concerned, he had always taken a deep interest in local hospital matters and that interest would not be relaxed one iota, in the future. He thought a good Board had been elected and one that would work harmoniously with the present management of the hospital, which was so excellent that it should not be disturbed. Mr W. D. Lysnar also returned his thanks to the electors for his return as a member of the new Board, expressing regret at the smallness of the poll. Dr Collins, in thanking the electors for his return, said that_ the elective principle ip connection with the Hospital Board, which had been adopted by the Government was what he had been contending for for years past. He congratulated the Friendly Societies upon the return of two of their nominees, but regretted that- at least one of the lady candidates had not been returned,- as he felt that the want of their broad humanitarian principles would be a distinct loss to- the Board. His sympathy was with the Friendly Societies, whose interests were in common with his own. Touching upon the question of the hospital he claimed that the Board had only to do with the external administration, and that the internal administration should be left to the superintendent of the institution, whom he had met professionally and for whom he had the greatest regard. Although it had been said that he was antagonistic to the internal administration of the hospital such was not the case, and as far as it was in his power lie would uphold the administration of the superintendent. With regard to the Friendly Societies he claimed that their objects and ambitions were'quite in acord with his own, and they could rely upon him to take the place of their nominee, who had been defeated at the poll. The Women’s Guild, which had also Tailed to get its representatives elected, would _ also find in°him a staunch representative. After a criticism of the action of the Mayor in his selection of certain councillors as candidates. Dr. Collins expressed the hope that the policy of the new Board would be one of unionism, harmony, and good feeling, and stated that as far as was in Iris power, he would pledge himself to assist in such a policy. WAIAPU. (From Ocr Own Correspondent.] The following have been duly elected as members of the V aiapu Hospital and Charitable Aid Board : —Messrs G. Busby, A. B. Williams, K. S. Williams, J. Clews. C.
