GISBORNE CLUB
There was a very good muster of members of the Gisborne Bowling Club on their green yesterday afternoon. Two games -which, aroused considerable interest were played, in the shape of the semi-final and final of the Second Handicap Fours. In the former Witty Avon from Simson by four noints, but in the latter he Avas defeated by Eure by the narroAV majority of a single point. A c-ouple of games in the Champion Singles Avere also got off. The- folloAVing Avere the. results of the games played:— —Second Handicap Fours. — Semi-final: BroAvn, Bullock (sub.), Robertson, Witty (skip) (8 points) 26 heat J. F. Pettie. T. Adair, Paltridge, Simson (skip) (scratch) 22. —The play in this game Avas decidedly interesting, and somewhat remarkable. In the first half it was altogether in favor of Simson, Avho ran up a score of 20 points, on eleven heads, Avliile Witty only scored 4_, which,. added to liis handicap, made the latter’s total 12. ThenceforAvard the tide of success ran in the opposite direction, and on the 19th head the scores Avere even, 22 all, Witty having put on ten points against a couple of singles scored by Simson. The former gained a. single, on the twentieth head, and three on the tAventy-first, thus winning by four points. Final: Hoff, Dodd. Mackintosh, Eure (skip) (5 points) 25 beat BroAvn, Bullock (sub.), Robertson, Witty (skip) (8 points) 24. This game excited much interest, and Avas keenly contested throughout. Witty had the best of it in the first half, the scores on the eleventh head, including handicap alloAvances, being Witty 18, Eure 12. The latter then began to reduce his opponent’s lead, and on the fifteenth head Aviped . it out altogether, putting up 3, making the scores equal, 20 all. On the next head Eure gained a lead of a single point, Avhich Witty extinguished on the seventeenth by putting up n, couple. Eure again obtained the lead by getting in two on the eighteenth, but on the nineteenth the veteran went to the front by scoring a couple. On the twentieth head Eure, putting up a singlb, equalised the total, end, by making one on the final head, Avon a splendidly contested game by the narroAvest possible margin. —Champion Singles.— Paltridge 21 beat Seymour 12. Notwithstanding the counter-attrac-tion of the sports yesterday, St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated on the Turanganui BoAvling Club’s green by a large number of boAvlers, Avho indulged in their favorite pastime. A number of ladies Avere also present, and keenly Avatched the games.' Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames M. G. Nasmith jnr and G. Muir, the refreshments being much appreciated. During the afternoon a challenge, game in the 1 en pant Fours Avas played. The result was: — _ —Pennant Fours. — Dan. Barry, R. Th el Avail B. Hird, A. SaAvver (skip) (holders) 26 beat D* B. pearance at the time to start, Theßvall took his place. The game throughout Avas entirely in the holders’ favor, they being 12 to 3 on the Bth head, 26 to 9 on th© 18th head, and winning easily by 13 points. The holders have iioav been challenged to a game by A. Skillicorn, W. HDouglas, W. Ratcliffe, J. J. .Martin (skip) —President’s Fours. —
In connection Avith the contest for the President’s Fours, the rink skipped by Greig have forfeited their game to McWhirter’s four. The game between these tAvo rinks Avas played three weeks ago, when McWhirtcr defeated Greig. In the defeated team a non-member Avas played as a substitute. The Match Committee took exception to a nonmember taking part in a match game, declared the game no match, and ordered it to be re-played. McWhirter appealed to th© General Committee, against this decision, but the appeal Avas dismissed. Greig has uoav forfeited the game to. McWhirter. The latter thus meets the rink skipped by Nasmith senr, in the semi-final, which av ill be played in three AA'oek’s time. The Avinnors then meet the rink skipped by Nasmith junr in the final. —Handicap Fours. — Entries for Handicap Fours close on the Turangaivui Club’s green to-morroAV afternoon. INTER-CLUB JUNIOR PENNANT. Tile contest between the Gisborne and Turanganui Clubs for the Junior Pennant, presented by Mr. J. D. Jeune, takes place on the Turanganui Club’s .green on Easter Monday. The first match takes place in the morning, and a second match in the afternoon. Each club Avill be represented by three rinks. The follcAviii" teams har-e been chosen to represent the Turanganui Club : H. Martin, H. J. Finn, W. H. Doug, las, J. D. Jeune (skip). A. Skillicorn, C. F. Leivis, R. O. Skeet, AV. Bruce (skip) Dan. Barry, W. McPherson, D. Hepburn. T. McConnell (skip). The teams to represent the Gisborne Club are to be selected shortly EASTER TOURNAMENT. A tournament for the Burton trophy takes place on the Gisborne Club’s green during the Easter holidays. Entries close to-morrow afternoon Avith Mr H. Mackintosh, secretary of the club. At the conclusion of the tournament a meeting of boAvlers Avill be held to discuss the advisability of forming a- centre comprising the Poverty Bay and HnAvke’i? Bay* districts. Messrs Ponsford and Simson have been appointed to skip the rinks Avliicli are to represent the Gisborne Club, and they Avill select, the members who are to play Avith them. The Turanganui Club’s rinks will be chosen to-morroAV, the skips for which are Messrs J. J. Martin and J. Greig.
