Lunch was partaken of on vthe ground, and the ladies of Tokomaru llprovided afternoon tea, which was handed round by the girls of the public |§stihool, .wiho had a half-holiday for the ■''occasion. W. Oates, captain of the East Coast team, won the toss, and sent his side in to bat, the innings resulting in 62 being scored. The Gisborne team, repledwitii 77. _ East Coast started their second innings and had lost five wickets for 55 runs when stumps were drawn. The match will be continued to-day. Scholium bowled six maiden overs in succession. T:HE TEAM ENTERTAINED. Last night the Gisborne team were the guests of the Tokomaru Cricket Ciub, at a social in the Tokomaru Hall. They spent a very enjoyable time, and', interspersed between the dances, a number of musical items were given, several of which were contributed by the visitors. This evening the team will attend a dinner and smoke concert at the hotel. . . The Tokomaru players and residents are treating the team most-hospitably, and giving them an exceedingly good time To-day there is a prospective trip ‘to the Te Puia. springs, as the Tokiomaru team intend supplying horses and brakes and taking the players if the match is finished soon enough.
THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM. HATCH AGAINST WANGANUI. [Per Press Association. 1 WANGANUI, March 18. The Australians commenced a match against an eleven of Wanganui this ai> ternoon. Butterworth, the Wanganui captain, won the toss and batted. Ihe first Wicket fell at 17 runs Butterworth being bowled by . Kelleway. Wanganui batted poorly. Nine wickets were down for 69 runs (Parker 26), when Henderson and Holland became associated and carried the total to j.--j by free batting. Gorry and Emery opened Australia’s innings. The first wicket fell for 16, Addison bowling Gorry. Whitty came in and Emery soon went out l.b.wi with the score at 20. Whitty batted aggressively, but the third wicket fell for 38, Face.y being bowled by Holland. Simipson and Dodds added five each to the score and six wickets were down for 52 runs when Bardsley joined Kelleway, both playing out time with the score, 6 wickets down, for ninety.
