FIRE.

FOUR-ROOMED COTTAGE DESTROYED. An alarm of fire was sounded at 3.40 p.m. yesterday, a strong glare being observable in the direction of the Kaiti Freezing Works. It was at first feared that the works were ablaze, but subsequently it was ascertained that the outbreak was in a four-roomed house, No. 56, Crawford Road, which was occupied by Mr and Mrs George Richardson. The Brigade turned out quickly, but owing to there being no water in the vicinity sdme few moments elapsed before they got a long lead connected with the nearest main. Once the water was on the flames were quickly subdued, but they had been burning very fiercely, and the interior was completely gutted. The occupants are altogether at a loss to account for the outbreak. There had been no fire in the kitchen since tea time—about 5 (p.m. —and Mrs Richardson retired to bed about 8 p.m., only to be aroused shortly afterwards by a crackling sound, and a distinct smell of fire. On proceeding to the kitchen, that apartment was unable to be entered, being full of blinding smoke. A large crowd quickly gathered, and many willing helpers assisted to remove the furniture, most of which, including a piano, was saved. A quantity of bedding, clothing and personal effects was destroyed, the latter including some fine speciments of greenstone, and a very valuable tiki, an heirloom. The housce was owned by Mr J. R. Jones, and was insured for £3OO in the Alliance office. The furniture was insured in the Commercial Union office for £3OO. included in the risk being a gig. harness, saddle and bridle.
